Tour de CT 100K Race

Count the helmets, if you choose, there are 160 of them as the riders in the first lap of the Tour of Connecticut on Waterbury streets. This view is riders ascending the extremely steep incline of Central Avenue. Bicyclists are followed by motorcycles and team vehicles carrying communications and parts such as tires. The race started at 12 Noon Saturday May 17, 2003. |

What a mess! 160 bicyclists turn the blind corner onto the Pine Street hill converging from a full road width event to a single lane event. The Pine Street Crush literally brought riders to a dead stop as they sorted their spaces. Pine Street was the longest single incline of the race. Pine Street was also divided down the middle with road barriers as the hill served as the only bi-directional segment of the event. Riders would hit speeds of 60 mph coming back down the hill ... though none managed that speed going up the hill :) |

Three blocks up Pine Street begins to break the pack, but strength prevails. Residents throughout the route picked their favorite perches and enjoyed the excitement and marveled at the accomplishment. |

| Racers completing the first lap of the 15 lap circuit racing down Pine Street at speeds of 60mph. Spectators were amazed that the lengthy line of 160 riders created such a strong wind as they passed. |
